As a 1968 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine
Dr. Mansmann has had a long-standing interest in equine sports medicine as a rider and
horse owner in various disciplines and equine practice owner in Santa Barbara, California
and Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
He obtained his PhD in 1974 from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and in 2010 given
honorary DACVIM-LA status. He has been involved in authoring books such as the 3rd edition
of Equine Medicine and Surgery, Equine Lameness and Equine Podiatry. He has published
several papers in various equine sports medicine areas including respiratory problems, metabolic
issues, lameness, rehabilitation, and podiatry. In 2002 he was the thirteenth inductee into the
American Farriers’ Journal Veterinarians’ International Hall of Fame. He has lectured
extensively nationally and internationally. He has worked at 4 US Colleges of Veterinary
Medicine recently being North Carolina State University. He is an Honor Roll member of the
AVMA and AAEP.
He has had a lifelong interest is teaching and organizing Continuing Education opportunities for
veterinarians, farriers and horse owners. They began in the early 1980’s with his Santa Barbara
Equine Practice sponsored meetings, in the 1990’s prominently the 1st and 2nd International
Conference on Equine Rescue and currently being involved with Equine Sports Medicine
Symposia beginning in 2016. As a Clinical Professor emeritus from NC State University
College of Veterinary Medicine, he has provided many years of equine podiatry teaching to their
CVM students. Currently he does equine podiatry and sports medicine consultation &
educational opportunities through his Equine Podiatry and Rehabilitation Practice in Chapel Hill,
North Carolina.
